Haystack Mountain Hermits – The Horses Stay Behind (One Last Ride)

With great-grandfather Tom enlisted in the Australian Light Horse 2nd Brigade, grandfather Tam in the New Zealand Army Medical Corps, and both of them serving at Gallipoli; family band Haystack Mountain Hermits were perhaps destined to write and record an ANZAC ballad.

The Horses Stay Behind (One Last Ride) is a family story, but a National story as well. It’s a tale of heroes and horses, telling the tragic tale of how the Light Horse soldiers had to leave their horses behind at the end of WW1. After winning an Arts Queensland grant delivered through the Scenic Rim Council’s RADF program, the band researched, wrote and recorded the song. A film clip is being produced with the support of the Australian Light Horse Association and will be released soon.
